FOCUS!

A major theme for me this year is to simply: FOCUS! To ‘focus’ may mean different things to different people. I have come up with a three-step framework that can help us find better focus on our tasks, our daily lives, and to become more focused individuals overall.

I have shared a summary of the key insights that are to follow in this written blog in the form of a video series. Do check out the videos over on Instagram and YouTube.

Many people attribute focus to the notion of being attentive on a particular task. While that is partly true, and the notions of both attention and focus are intertwined, there is a lot more to focus than attention.

Overall, we start with our identity: being a focused individual on the macro level. There are structural and organisational related day-to-day aspects to being focused, which operate on the meso level. Finally, there is the micro level of being attentive and focused on specific tasks. You need to master all three layers to achieve focus successfully.

The three layers of focus

The concentric circles show the different connected layers of focus. These layers must operate together for an individual to become more focused overall.

Many people like to dive straight in and want to know how to focus on anything without the outer two layers/aspects of focus being in place first. Unfortunately, this may simply not work. Even if it does work on some occasions, it is often short-lived and ineffective to overall bigger aims. We have got to work our way from the outer layer first, with the broad sense of focus, and then work our way down to narrower ideas of focus.

It can be easy to lose sight of the bigger macro level if we are too concerned on just attaining micro level of focus, perhaps on many seemingly unrelated or aimless tasks. Similarly, being too broadly and loosely concerned with the macro level without much structure and organisation on the meso level can make it hard to focus on the micro level.

The main key word that accompanies each level of focus is as follows:

  • Macro: purpose

  • Meso: structure

  • Micro: attention
